The African Union on Tuesday, expressed dismay after Italian Interior Minister and Deputy Premier, Matteo Salvini in contrast migrants to slaves.
“The African Union Fee expresses dismay on the feedback made by the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Matteo Salvini, at a current convention in Vienna at which he likened African immigrants to slaves,” the AU stated in a press release.
“It’s the view of the African Union that name-calling won’t resolve the migration challenges going through Africa and Europe”. It continued
Salvini had a verbal spat with Luxembourg Overseas Minister Jean Asselborn after reportedly saying “we do not want to have new slaves to exchange the kids we not produce” final week.
“Within the pursuits of constructive engagement on the migration debate between the 2 continents, the African Union requests the Italian Deputy Prime Minister to retract his derogatory assertion about African migrants and additional urge Italy to emulate and assist different European Union member states, like Spain, which have prolonged assist and safety to migrants in misery, no matter their origin and authorized standing, earlier than their admission standing is decided,” the AU stated.
