OWN’s new series, “Love Is,” follows the trials and tribulations of a weak younger couple, Yasir (Will Catlett) and Nuri (Michele Weaver), as they chase their desires in LA.
It’s primarily based on the connection of series creators Mara and Salim Akil, who’ve been married for 19 years and whose story caught the eye of OWN founder Oprah Winfrey, who was instrumental in turning “Love Is” right into a TV present.
The series jumps backwards and forwards in time over three a long time, beginning in 1997, with Catlett and Weaver taking part in the youthful variations of Yasir, an aspiring director, and Nuri, a fledgling TV author. Wendy Davis and Clarke Peters play older, present-day variations of the characters.
Mara Akil, Catlette and Weaver visited The Publish not too long ago to speak about “Love Is.”
“This present is a sincere reply to a honest query that has been requested of me within the final 5 to seven years through Instagram,” says Mara (who created “Girlfriends,” “The Recreation” and “Being Mary Jane”). “In ‘Girlfriends’ I used to be exploring the query of, ‘Can Joan have all of it?’ then ‘The Recreation’ and ‘Being Mary Jane’ occurred and I used to be having this dialog extra particularly with black girls within the course of my profession. This time round [with ‘Love Is’] my viewers is saying, ‘We wish some solutions.’ ”
“The world was actually going backward earlier than ‘Love Is,’ with the respect degree of how males deal with girls,” says Catlett. “After which right here comes this venture, with love, that claims, ‘I’m going to be weak. I’m going to share my story, I’m going to speak about issues that I’m not snug with in an effort to heal.’ Since you may by no means be delivered from it should you don’t speak about it.”
Weaver says she has lots in frequent along with her on-screen character, though they haven’t adopted precisely the identical path.
“It’s very bizarre the way it’s just like me, and despite the fact that I’m not married — I don’t have a narrative fairly like Nuri — I’ve had comparable experiences with courting,” says Weaver. “I did have a relationship with a man who had potential. I noticed the place he was going and I invested lots and folks have been like, ‘You recognize he’s a bum.’ The factor was there was a distinction between him and Salim’s maturity. Though he was about 10 years aside from Salim it sort of devastated me as a result of I invested a lot, and I do know the potential of love.
“However I needed to depart him I needed to let him go as a result of he didn’t have character.”
Mara Akil says she doesn’t really feel it’s her obligation to convey sure varieties of characters to tv. “I really feel prefer it’s my fact as an artist,” she says. “I’ve been requested to be a greater story teller. I’ve been requested to be a greater artist, and I’m enthusiastic about that. I’ve depended a lot on Salim, my husband, my enterprise associate, to execute my scripts. And though he does an excellent job it was by no means completely what I wished, and nobody’s going to get that for you however you.”
Weaver, Catlett and Akil have been requested what they suppose the present’s title represents.
Weaver: “Love Is … threat.”
Catlett: “Love Is … you’ll be able to’t put something after that it. It’s simply is.”
Akil: Love Is …ours to have. Cease worrying about discovering love … discover you. Assume of your self as a clay. Each relationship is a lesson [both] good and dangerous. Some of these dangerous ones form the perimeters of the particular person you develop into. Do you wish to shut your self out from everybody and stay a easy mildew or do you wish to be formed into a lovely sculpture whenever you open your self to like?”
