‘Scandal’ series finale marks the end for Pope and her gladiators

“Scandal” ends its run Thursday evening at 10 on ABC after seven seasons and 124 episodes.

Its finale, “Over the Cliff,” wraps the soapy saga of highly effective DC fixer Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and these in her orbit: her evil father, “Papa Pope” (Joe Morton); Huck (Guillermo Diaz); Quinn (Katie Lowes); ex-President (and ex-lover) Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn); Grant’s ex-wife (and present US president) Mellie Grant (Bellamy Younger); operative (and ex-lover) Jake Ballard (Scott Foley); and scheming VP Cyrus Beene (Jeff Perry).

The series, created by Shonda Rhimes, launched star Washington into the stratosphere and, for one temporary shining second, stored workplace watercoolers abuzz.

‘She was unapologetically flawed despite the fact that she was greater than succesful in her skilled life.’

“They’re at a candy spot proper now the place they’re leaving me wanting extra,” says SiriusXM authorized analyst Laura Coates (“The Laura Coates Present”), a “Scandal” superfan who hosted an internet “Scandal” recap present. “What was fascinating to me was the concept that [Olivia Pope] was someone that appeared like me,” Coates says. “She not solely had a seat at the desk however was fixing issues and addressing points in a bipartisan method. It was a method to establish, if we may think about ourselves as the final fighter and drawback solver. For me it resonated in a particular place and, in some ways, I believe plenty of girls had been craving to see themselves in energy mirrored on the display.

“Olivia did that for us,” she says. “She was unapologetically flawed despite the fact that she was greater than succesful in her skilled life. It was great to see such a distinguished, stunning lady ready of energy.”

Coates says her favourite “Scandal” episode is “The Garden Chair,” which aired in 2015 and featured guest-star Courtney B. Vance as the father of an unarmed black man gunned down by police. “That’s one in all the moments when the present actually dovetailed with our tradition,” she says.
