John Boyega Says He Is Drift Compatible With This Starlett

In the upcoming blockbuster Pacific Rim Uprising, the sequel to the 2010 sleeper hit about fighting giant monsters called Kaiju in 300-foot tall robots called Jaegers, John Boyega’s character, Jake Pentecost, is pretty much a loner. He’s content to scavenge the city for anything he can barter or sell, but when it’s time to fight, he becomes a reluctant team player.

Part of what makes the Jaeger system work is that two pilots establish a neural connection where they read each other’s thoughts and fight more effectively. It’s called being “drift compatible.” In the sequel, Boyega is joined by Scott Eastwood and Cailey Spaeny as Jaeger pilots eager to save the world. So we asked all of them which celebrity they’d want to fight with, if given the opportunity.

“I’m picking my Lupita, man,” says Boyega. Nyong’o was his co-star in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, playing the wide-eyed Maz Kanata. “Lupita is my rib ma. I’ll be drift compatible with Lupita. She’s drift compatible with me now anyway. She always knows what’s going on in my head. So definitely Lupita.”

Cailee Spaeny: Beyonce or Nicki Minaj?

Given the choice between Beyonce and Nicki Minaj, Spaeny jumped at the chance to fight alongside Blue Ivy’s mama.

“That’s not even a question. She’s the Queen. Sometimes before scenes I turn on Beyonce to get into a sort of “I can do anything sort of mood. So definitely Beyonce.”

Scott Eastwood &…B.B.King

As for Scott Eastwood, he hopes that he is drift compatible with his father, Hollywood legend Clint Eastwood, but would go in a very different direction for his co-pilot.

“What about some of the greats, like B.B. King,” he says of the late great blues legend. “You’d have some good tempo. We’d be smashing Kajiu with a rhythm.”
