Iconic fashion photos hit the auction block

Legendary hair guru Leland Hirsch made a name for himself in the beauty industry by revolutionizing hair color and turning it into an expressive art form starting in the late ’80s

Throughout his celebrated career, Hirsch acquired an impressive collection of high-fashion editorial photographs by artists including Irving Penn, Steven Meisel and Herb Ritts, and that depict the likes of early supermodels Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.

Hirsch’s expansive collection of photographs, titled “A Beautiful Life: Photographs From the Collection of Leland Hirsch,” features more than 50 works of iconic fashion images. On April 10, Sotheby’s will present Hirsch’s collection via a gallery exhibition and an auction.

Some of the images are a bit on the racy side. The legendary shot of supermodels Campbell, Crawford, Turlington, Stephanie Seymour and Tatjana Patitz in their birthday suits, captured by Ritts, is estimated to sell between $50,000 to $70,000. Another snapped by Richard Avedon of a nude Nastassja Kinski tangled up with a serpent is projected to fetch between $60,000 to $90,000.

Others include Penn’s close-up portrait of Pablo Picasso, which is estimated to sell for $100,000, and Michael Halsband’s photo of boxing-ready duo Andy Warhol and artist Jean-Michel Basquiat that’s projected to sell between $15,000 and $25,000.
